Fiona Smith AM
Senior Policy Advisor
BA, LLB, MAICD, Grad Dip (Dispute Resolution & Judicial Administration)
Fiona has been with Trust for Nature since 2010, focusing on the public policy aspects of private land conservation. She is currently looking at land-based taxation issues as they affect landowners permanently protecting land for public benefit; and how the Trust's work can support and be informed by Traditional Owners.
Fiona manages land for conservation that her family has owned since 1949 – over 300ha in the Trawool Valley. She loves the passion conservation covenanters and her colleagues have for protecting private land and habitat for native species. She worries most about the challenge of climate change and invasive species to realising our vision.
Fiona's professional background is as a public interest lawyer and past appointments have included: Chairperson of Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission and Victoria's Business Licensing Authority. She was honoured with an AM in the General Division of the Order of Australia in 2017. The award celebrates her service to the community and her human rights and social justice advocacy.
