Corangamite
|
The Corangamite region is home to a remarkable variety of landscapes and vegetation types.
The diverse landscapes range from the wet and hilly forests of the Otway Ranges to open basalt grasslands that occupy drier and far less fertile areas from Colac to Ballarat and westward to Mount Emu Creek.
A wide range of environmental conditions across the region has created this diversity.

Different soil types, coastal influences, fire histories, and rainfall patterns are some of the major natural factors that have shaped the region's vegetation.
Native grasslands and grassy woodlands once spread out over the entire basalt plain that runs from Melbourne and westward to the South Australian border.
Now these grasslands and woodlands are represented only by small patches on roadsides, rail reserves and private land. |

About 70 per cent of land in Corangamite is privately owned, and only five per cent of this supports remnant vegetation.
Trust for Nature is working in Corangamite to conserve and enhance this legacy.
